How did Gateways prepare you for your future?
As a current MS1 at UT Houston, I can confidently say that the Gateways program prepared me tremendously for my first year of medical school. The rigorous curriculum at Gateways equipped me with a strong foundation in subjects like anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, which made the transition to medical school much smoother. I entered my MS1 year feeling more confident in my academic abilities and study habits. The time, effort, and dedication I put into my studies at Gateways not only solidified my foundational knowledge but also helped me discover effective study strategies that continue to serve me well. Moreover, the collaborative and supportive environment at Gateways played a significant role in my growth. The faculty and staff were dedicated to our success, always offering mentorship and guidance. My peers became not only study partners but also lifelong friends who continue to inspire and support me.
What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?
Make this year count! Gateways is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with your peers and learn from one another. The connections you build here — with both your classmates and mentors — will become a valuable part of your support system as you navigate this journey together. By the end of the program, you’ll have so much to reflect on — experiences that will be pivotal in shaping your medical school application and preparing you for interviews. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, seek support from faculty and staff, and fully immerse yourself in everything Gateways has to offer!
