Biography
How did Gateways prepare you for your future?
The Gateways program reinforced a genuine curiosity about medicine. It offered a solid foundation for medical school. During my first year at West Virginia University School of Medicine, I found myself going back to the notes from the Gateways program. Also, what started as a poster presentation in my Brown studies led to a passion for research and several publications in medical journals. I would not have been selected as an AOA member at West Virginia University without the valuable preparation I received in the Gateways program. For this, I am grateful for the quality of the classes and the professors, especially Professor Anandarajah (“Dr. A”) who was the guiding force for so many of us with medical school aspirations.
What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?
I recommend medical students make the most of their Gateways experience. Not only does performing well in your classes improve your odds of attending medical school, but it makes life much easier once you matriculate. If you hit the floor running during Gateways, your transition to medical school will be smoother. I also encourage students to take advantage of the research opportunities at Brown. Many medical students don’t realize research takes months or years to publish. Medical school goes by faster than you may think, so try to get on top of things early.
