Biography
How did Gateways prepare you for your future?
Academically, the well-thought out Gateways curriculum granted me a solid conceptual foundation that has benefited me in both my gap year job and medical school. Classes like CLSM and Anatomy lab allowed me to approach healthcare in deeper, more tangible ways that helped me answer the question "why medicine?" Through the coursework and classroom discussion, I discovered a passion for bioethics and am currently pursuing an M.D./M.A. in Bioethics. The Gateways program also allowed me to have the experiences and background knowledge I needed to become a more competitive applicant for this dual degree.
Personally, Gateways gave me the confidence to tackle any challenge that comes my way. It is no small feat to tackle a first-year medical school curriculum and Gateways provided all the necessary tools and resources, like Learning Consultants and Team based learning, I needed to succeed. I am extremely thankful for the life-long mentors I met in the Gateways Program. They were instrumental in my getting into medical school and I will continue leaning on them throughout my professional career.
What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?
To potential Gateways students: I would urge you to take this chance on yourselves. It is a big decision, but it changed my life for the better in so many ways. In fact, years after graduating, I'm still reaping the benefits of my Gateways experience.
To current Gateways students: Your time in Gateways will fly by. It will be tough but extremely rewarding. Explore all the resources available to you through the Gateways Program and Brown University at large. Get to know the amazing faculty, your incredible peers, and the growing and engaged Alumni base. If possible, sign up for Electives and get involved in the larger Warren Alpert and Providence communities. Outside of school, I would recommend exploring Rhode Island - it is a beautiful state with lots of good food and so much to do!
