Biography
How did Gateways prepare you for your future?
Gateways helped me prove to myself and medical schools that I was capable of learning in the rigorous and fast-paced nature of a medical school curriculum. While every medical school has a different curriculum and pedagogical practices, my experience at Brown has enhanced my ability to learn new material and develop a deeper understanding of previously learned content. Another aspect of Gateways that I have found to be particularly valuable was the PCCS course which taught me about social medicine and the US healthcare system and how these topics are interwoven with what it means to be a physician.
What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?
Gateways is a big transition from undergraduate studies. It is important to take the curriculum seriously and devote enough time and effort to succeed. Use this as an opportunity to push yourself to be the best version of yourself. With that being said, it is not necessary to study 24/7 and ace every quiz/exam in order to get into medical school. Medicine will take up as much time as you give it. Keep doing the activities that bring you joy. Finding this balance is critical for enjoying the process of lifelong learning.
Any other comments?
Gateways has an amazing faculty and alumni network. I can’t express how helpful the faculty and staff were with solidifying my application and preparing me for interviews. I’m looking forward to seeing the amazing work that my former classmates and fellow alumni accomplish in the future!
