Biography
How did Gateways prepare you for your future?
Gateways prepared me for medical school in two major ways. First, it showed me how rigorous medical school courses are and which study strategies work the best for my learning style.
Second, Gateway’s curriculum is unique to other Master programs in that it integrates public health and advocacy into the basic sciences. As a future physician-scientist passionate about advocacy, learning about historically marginalized communities, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and social determinants of health and their impact on health and disease prepared me to integrate these concepts not only into the organizations I chose to join as a medical student but also the basic and translational research I will study in the future.
What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?
Applying to medical school is an arduous process and along the way it is inevitable you will encounter failure. Know that failure does not mean you don’t deserve to become a physician. If becoming a physician is your goal, pursue it relentlessly and never give up. Self-efficacy will make you successful.
Any other comments?
Without Gateways I wouldn’t be in a Medical Scientist Training Program today. The Gateways curriculum is difficult but the professors and Gateways leadership want to see you succeed and will help you along the way and beyond.
