Biography

How did Gateways prepare you for your future?

Completing the Gateways program provided me the assurance I needed to undergo the rigorous MD-PhD application process. By performing competitively in first-year medical school curricula, coupled with invigorating discussions with faculty members and fellow classmates, I acquired confidence in myself and my application. Gateways provided me ample assistance to succeed in and out of the classroom, in the clinic, and, importantly, on the MCAT. Lastly, the PCCS courses equipped me with the knowledge and lexicon to adequately describe the healthcare system as it currently stands - this was vital during my interviews and even now as a first-year medical student.

What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Masters of Medical Science students?

Be an absolute sponge. A year goes by quicker than you think, and it can be easy to be bogged down by the minutiae and details in the course, as well as getting caught up in the stress of the application that is to come. Remind yourself to be present and appreciate the privilege of phenomenal mentors and classmates. While you should definitely learn to perform well in class, you should also learn for the sake of learning. Medicine, and the science and sociology of it, are absolutely phenomenal and will greatly benefit you even outside of the field.

Do you have any other comments?

Don't be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. The volume can be daunting, but every faculty member, upperclassmen, TA's, fellow students, and alumni, are some of the kindest individuals you will meet throughout this long journey. Keep in touch after you leave and continue giving back to this incredible community. Cheers to all of you, and best of luck!
