How did Gateways prepare you for your future?

The Gateways program was truly a guiding light in my path to medicine. The curriculum provided me with an incredibly solid foundation for entering medical school and incorporated enlightening experiences surrounding public health, policy, and social determinants. With respect to pre-medical support, the staff at Gateways were the most helpful and informed members of the village that led me to where I am today; I would not be here without them. Perhaps most importantly, Gateways enabled me to see my true potential in the field of healthcare and gave me the confidence I needed to continue on this journey.

What advice do you have for current/future Gateways Master of Medical Sciences students?

A piece of advice that I would give future Gateways students is to take the risk and put your best foot forward. Submit that application, even if you are doubtful of the outcome. Reach out to that physician for mentorship, even if you think they are too busy. Engage in an experience outside of your comfort zone, even if you think you may not fit in. You control your next steps!

I believe humility and transparency in this process are incredibly valuable. If you are ever feeling down on yourself for the circuitous path you are taking, please know you are not alone!
